Hope is Hope. It has to shatter. Bollywood frenzy was always mastered that phenomena. Films are films but Bollywoodian films are more than filmy films. Some of them had might have adopted the fervor of the realistic cinema but still they are too escapist in portraying the truth. Ramu’s new flicker Sarkar Raj is the perfect example of that.
Ram Gopal Verma is one of the best directors of Bollywood. He has proved himself with his flicks like Satya and Company. These two films are rare of rarest films produced by Bollywood but after that it’s all lol on the name of films. The saddest point is that films became a medium to build his capitalistic empire and from here the decline of Ramu has started. As long as film is ripping money with its own style its ok but when money drives the films, then all things turn ugly. Presently we are the ugly face of Ramu, who was our loved one once upon a time.
Economy is the need of the film industry and everyone understands that but Is there any short of money for Ramu to make his own genre of films. No. Satya was a very low budget film and done wonderful. So, did his Company. And he wants to film like that there are a lot of producers who can produce his films. (For example look at the list of Producers of Sarkar Raj, it’s almost half a dozen). It shows the popularity and demand of his genre of films. As far technical inputs Sarkar Raj is Ramu’s film. No doubt about it. It has all the low, tight shots which are very much dearer to him. The camera captures the best of expressions of the actors. Even the characters are poised as like his earlier films, at least they try to but they don’t have life. Here the question arises then, where he has done the mistake.
No it’s not a mistake, it’s a blunder. If, Ramu thinks that he can go on playing with technical stuffs (no doubt he is master of this) and the audience will ponder it and exclaim, here he is wrong. Indian audience always starves for a well knit story line how much hidden it may be and the second thing is that new youth of India is much more informed and advanced now a day than in 90’s. The Power plant Project through which he wants to show changes within the society and the new leader has already undergone.
He has mistaken because he hasn’t stick to the truth while garnering the story line. He is master of documenting social behavior and changes especially of the lumpen class but when he tries to build a story which contradicts with the truth he fails miserably. Sarkar Raj is the case of this mistaken falsehood, deliberately included to give someone (who else than Bal Thackeray) an upper hand. Of course if a government fails against him in projecting a project of thousands of crore, then how a filmmaker worth of few crore, will survive against his wishes. So, he chooses to not to show the real face of Subhash Nagre (Bal Thackeray). The politics of aggressive regionalism, nationalism and the dirty politics of Communalism played by him simply gone into shadow and to exclaim us it’s a Protagonist who is there for the welfare of us alone standing and fighting all odds as like he is our god. But film industry is master in making these kinds of flicks.
Everybody knows that even the Enron project upon which this film is based was highly opposed by ShivSena. And at that point of time it was a congress government not a government formed by Thackeray’s Party. When ripping the opposition of the Project they came to power they have again allowed the Enron to continue there work while almost all the terms and conditions were almost same.
Ramu is brilliant when he was politically correct in his flicks like Satya and Company. Here he himself dropped his powerful stuffs, and then who will save his boat from drowning when he himself has thrown his savior stick. He has failed miserably as he is politically in correct in the whole film. The last dialogue of the film by Amitabh becomes farce when he says He lost everything even Shankar the last son and he asks for Cheeku his sibling. But in the whole film the whole family was there for the welfare of the society and suddenly wants to promote his own siblings. The question raised by his aid Chandar who has served him for 20 yrs on the name of Maharashtra Nirman is right that why he has no place in his system against his siblings.
Ramu is a great craft man of Indian Cinema. At present there are only two cine makers who have command over craft of cinema, Sudhir Mishra and Ram Gopal Verma but their failure sucks the film goers and its only because in spite of all their skill they become politically incorrect sometimes and the loss is for everyone.
